狼と香辛料Ⅱ 第９話

狼と香辛料Ⅱの第９話を見ました。
エーブの紹介でリゴロと会える事になったロレンスだが……

第９幕-狼と無謀な商談-

エーブとの会話で、
街の年代記作家であり五十人会議の書記を勤める、
リゴロに紹介される事となったロレンス。
翌朝にホロを伴って彼の家を訪れるが、
応対したのがリゴロ本人ではなく、
彼の世話役でもある修道女のメリルであることに戸惑うことに。

彼の家の中にある、一面ガラス張りの庭園。
来訪に応じたリゴロは五十人会議が終わったことを告げるが、
ホロとロレンスは、
二人が聞きたいであろう事を見抜いて機先を制したリゴロの、
五十人会議の書記という立場から培われた、
鋭い洞察力に素直に感嘆する。

古い伝承を知りたい理由を問われたロレンスは、
正直に理由を語り、
伝承の記された書物を借り受けることとなったのだが……

気が弱い優男風にも見えるリゴロですが、
洞察力は半端無く高いですね。
ロレンスは動揺をほんの少し見せただけですが、
隣にいたホロの仕種も含めて読み取ってしまうとは……
前回、エーブは「リゴロに近付こうとする者は多い」
と言っていましたが、
会議の書記という立場だけではなく、
この洞察力も理由に含まれていそうですね。

エーブがリゴロにロレンスを紹介したのは、
どうやら五十人会議の内容を知るのが目的だったようですね。
とは言ってもリゴロの事はエーブの方が知っているわけで、
リゴロがロレンスに内容を話してくれれば儲けもの、
程度の感覚だったんでしょう。

教会相手に石像の取引による商売をしていたエーブ。
しかし、北の大遠征が中止となったことで、
石像の需要が無くなってしまい、
教会側が取引を拒んだことで商売が出来なくなった。
そこでエーブは一儲けするためロレンスに対し
「ホロを売ってくれ」と商談を持ちかけてきますが……
ひょっとしてエーブは、
ホロが狼の化身であることに気付いているんでしょうか？
それとも、人身売買が目的なんでしょうか？
