悪いのはどっち？

女性権利の活動団体が、アメリカのオバマ大統領を非難している。
オバマさんがどんな発言を行ったのか、その全てを知らないのだが、
記事を読む限りでは、
寧ろこの活動団体が過剰反応しているように思えて仕方が無い。

オバマ大統領はエジプトのカイロ（Cairo）で行った演説の中で、(中略)
西側諸国はイスラム教徒の市民たちによる宗教の実践が適切であると思われる場合には
それを妨げないようにすべきで、例えば、イスラム教徒の女性の服装について
指図するようなことはすべきでないと述べていた。

イスラム世界では一般的に、時として強制的に、
イスラム教徒女性のスカーフ着用が義務づけられ、
これを女性の従属や抑圧の象徴ととらえる見方もある。
女性の権利の活動家グループは、このスカーフを女性の権利を侵害するものとみなしている。
フランスでは少女や若い女性が公立学校でこのスカーフを着用することを禁止している。

私がポイントに挙げたいのは２点ある。
一つはイスラム教徒の市民たちによる宗教の実践が適切であると思われる場合には
それを妨げないようにすべきという一文。
これは、強制されていたなら介入しても良いが、自主的にやっている事を
わざわざ止めさせるのは、おかしいだろって意味にも解釈できますね。

もう一つは女性の権利の活動家グループは、
このスカーフを女性の権利を侵害するものとみなしている。
フランスでは少女や若い女性が
公立学校でこのスカーフを着用することを禁止している。の部分。
矛盾していることに気が付いていないんでしょうかねえ……
スカーフの着用を強制することが権利の侵害と主張していますが、
非着用を強制することも権利の侵害に当たると思うのだが……

恐らくオバマさんは、イスラム教徒の女性がスカーフを着用することを、
理解は示しても、全面的に肯定して支持している訳ではないと思う。
迫害されることの辛さ、差別を受けることの苦しさは、
アメリカ初の黒人大統領であるオバマさんは理解出来ているはずだし。
だからこその発言だったんじゃないだろうか

その真意を推し量ろうとせず、額面通りに受け止めて非難する女性の権利活動団体は、
些か滑稽とも言えるだろう。
まあ、私が偏光レンズ越しにオバマさんを見ている可能性も否めないが……
